Bloody cold :) Well, apart from that, it seems a visually interesting city with more surviving architecture than elsewhere in Poland (It might be an ancient country but it has an incredibly young built environment). The hostel I'm staying in is in an old apartment building with a huge central timber staircase. No lifts here. Four long flights of stairs to my 2nd floor apartment/room. Note to self: Don't forget anything when you come down in the morning. The floors are parquetry and double glazing on the windows is rendered useless as all the wooden frames are warped. But the bathrooms are modern. Haven't had a shower yet, so not discovered the modernity of the plumbing ... We have central heating but I'm not sure how this is fired. The overwhelming smell in the streets is of coal fires and the buildings are quite blackened... Have pulled the sleeping bag out as I'm sure the one blanket provided will not be enough.
Spent a couple of hours this afternoon planning my explorations from the warmth of a recommended coffee shop "Ciasteczka z Krakowa - Oryginat Smakuje Najlepiej" or "Cookies from Krakow - the original taste the best" - the girls at the hostel call it the Cookie Coffee Shop.
And I thought Darrell Lea had a standout uniform
Is it French? Maybe, but definitely classical European
I chose the biscuits and other yummies from the patisserie cabinet and they made a coffee to order and served the table in the cutiest dark brown uniform with white collar and apron and a little straw hat with a brown ribbon. The pictures on the walls were a collection of artistic prints of street scapes and fashion but one wall featured framed photos of a European male in a village in Africa - I wondered if the owner sponsors a community...
